Out of Sight, Out of Mind

I love Jewelery as much as I love clothes and shoes.  And like my clothes, most by my bling comes from thrift stores and yard sales.  I am sooooooooooooo hard on jewelry that I can't spend any kind of money on it.  I have broken my engagement ring three times and the last time I took it in to get fixed the lady scolded me for having paint caked on the inside.  I don't think I own any pieces that cost more than $10.00, except for a pair of diamond earrings that my husband gave me for our anniversary.  But most of the time I am way to scared to even wear them because I just know that I will bang my head or walk into a wall and one will fall out and be lost forever.  So on my thrifting adventures, here are some of my favorite jewelry finds......

This is one of my favorite necklaces.  I bought it at Goodwill for 6.99.  I actually thought that was a little steep but I have definitely worn it enough to get my $6.99 out of it.  I had it on one time when I was working at the gallery and this lady asked me who the designer was.  She sure looked at me funny when I said Goodwill! hahahaha

I bought this at Habitat Resale Store which surprisingly has a lot of great jewelry.  It cost $2.99.

$1.00 yard sale find.

This one and I go way back.  I bought this when I was thrifting back in high school.  Can't remember how much I paid but I am assuming since I was in high school it wasn't much!

Another Habitat Restore find at 2.99.

I flipped over this necklace because it has a pom pom on it!  I happily bought it at Goodwill for 3.99.

I haven't worn this much but for a quarter at a yard sale, I can at least use the beads for something else.

This picture doesn't do this pendent justice.  It is so. so. pretty.  Again a Habitat Restore steal at $4.00.
I have a ton of necklaces. I love to find jewelry while thrifting, but I also inherited some of my grandma's costume jewelery and I totally went though a jewelry making phase.  I would never wear half the stuff I have if it was stuffed in a jewelry box where I couldn't see it.  I am an out of sight out of mind kinda of girl.  I came up with a solution.  This is probably not the best looking idea for your closet but I loveeeee it and it works for me.
I bought a piece of peg board at Lowe's for a few dollars and painted it my favorite color.  I also bought a ton of little hooks.

I guess these peg boards are typically used for hanging tools.  They have a ton of different holders, hooks, display units that fit right in the peg board.  I love these little cups that hold my bracelets that wouldn't hang on the hooks.

No tangles, no sorting though tons of stuff, just a glance and I know what I want to wear.

Here is a trick for organizing earrings.  I have no idea where I saw this, probably in a magazine but it is such a brillant idea.  The trays keep all my earrings separated and you can glance though the trays to find the right pair for your outfit.  How is that for being organized!?!?!

They even stack.   If you're also an out of sight out of mind kinda girl, this might be the solution you are looking for.
P.S.  Buy, paint, and install the peg board while your husband is not at home.

The winner of the giveaway is Handmade Housewife! Congratulations Hayley!  You can contact Cindy at coopercouple@bellsouth.net  to pick out the style and size of your favorite shirt!!!

  3. THE peg board is IDEAL! I started a post about organizing my jewelry, which I am still in the process of, but I LOVE this one. I wonder where I would hang it. My closet is too small, but I bet in my bathroom because no guests go in there anyhow and the wall paper s UGLY and needs to come down. This will give a pop of color over those early 90's small blue and mauve flowers. hahaah

  4. Ahhh, I won!! I'm so excited :) Thanks for the giveaway! Love the peg board idea, it's a much better solution than my pricy standing jewelry chest that I still paid too much for even off Craig's List. And I love the color it adds to what is usually a pretty boring space. Great job!

  8. oh HOW did I miss this one?? The jewelry I don't make, and most of I DO make now comes from your same sources. I just scoff at prices at mall stores. The worst are the establishments catering to the 50+ crowd. $75 for costume jewelry?? You, my sweet friend, are always ahead of the trend. I have used ice-cube trays to store my thousands of beads for a while now. I foraged color chips from the paint store and glued the to the end to ID. Findings ID tags have pictures of items collaged from trade mags. I store them in a large paper sorter thingy with lots of cubbies I got at office box store. Wish I could say I scavenged the furniture part. if you do things with little parts, it's a life saver. (Of course I ran out of room and all my vintage collection is lying in box lids on the floor.) After Christmas is traditional dig-out-the-studio time.

  11. Great info! I got mini ice cube trays (a bundle of 3) from the Dollar store. Not only do they hold earrings, but small stuff in my craft room desk as well.
